So we’ve experienced Sammi’s first bleed post-op, which I went into great detail on my post yesterday. Meaning, Sammi had her splenectomy over 4 months ago, and this past week was her first time having a new tumor rupture and bleed somewhere inside her, thus causing her to be extremely lethargic, unable to stand, unsteady, sleepy, etc. When she does stand, she gets very tired very quickly.
Today is turning into another good day, which is awesome, but it’s scary for us. It’s easy for her to overdo it now, especially as she begins to feel better again. Our goal is to keep her resting beyond her initial ‘feeling better’ stage, so that she can heal entirely on the inside. (If that’s even possible?) But, for anyone that’s ever had a German Shepherd, getting them to rest and stay laying down when they don’t want to is nearly impossible.

I went to the store last night to pick up some more sliced roast beef for her, and I bought some beef hearts and beef stew chunks, as well. I figured the nice bloody beef hearts would be chock full of iron for her, which is key right now for her anemia. I sliced them up into tiny pieces and began hand feeding her. It was a huge hit! Good God, this kid loves her beef. I filled up another plate, and she ate all of that, too. Shortly after, the color in her gums started turning back to pink, for the first time since before Christmas. It was a huge relief for Dave and me. It meant she was feeling better, she could rest comfortably, she wasn’t actively bleeding, and she was happy to eat.
Thanks so much for posting about Sammi! My boy Jake was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma two weeks ago, had surgery, and started chemo two days ago. It’s heartbreaking and devastating. Resources like this blog are helpful. Please hug your crew for me!
Jess I’m so sorry to hear about Jake. It’s a heartbreaking and trying process. I wish the best for your sweet boy! Please message me and let me know how he’s doing from time to time. Are you a part of the HSA group on Facebook? It’s a great resource. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/422464568087083/ Much love to you.
